TheCIRSProtonTherapyDosimetryHeadisananthropomorphicheadphantomdesignedforcommissioningandtreatmentplanningsystem(TPS)verificationwithanyconformalorIMRTProtonTherapysystem1.
ThephantomisconstructedofCIRStissue-equivalentmaterials，whichmimicreferencetissueswithin1.5%forprotonsandwithin1%forphotonsfrom50KeVto15MeV.TheProtonTherapyHeadcanbeusedduringallstandardIMRTproceduresfromCTimageacquisitiontoprotonbeamdeliveryverification1，3.
Tissueequivalencyofdetailedinternalstructuresmakesthephantomidealfortreatmentplanevaluationinhighdensity-gradientlocations，whicharespecificallyimportantinprotontherapy2，suchasaircavityvs.bonestructures.Internalstructuresincludebrain，bonewithcorticalandtrabeculardistinction，larynx，trachea，fully-opensinuscavities，nasalandmouthcavities，andteethwithdistinctdentine，enamelandrootstructure.
Model731-HNapproximatestheaveragemalehumanheadinbothsizeandstructuretoallowforintuitivesetupwithanypatientpositioningorfixationdevice.
Onehalfofthephantomissectionedin2cmincrementsforthreefilmlocationsinthecranio-caudaldirectionstartingfromtheapproximatecenterofthesagittalplane.BecauseslicesareorthogonaltotheCTaxialplane，artifactscausedbyresidualairgapsarenoticeablyreducedcomparedtostandardaxialslices.
ProtonsystemcommissioningisenhancedbyplacementofatungstenBBinamolarandatitaniumprosthesisattachedbytwoscrewsatC3andC5vertebra.
